#1 You Wake Up Refreshed and Alert in the Morning
This is what sleep is supposed to do. It’s supposed to give your body adequate time to recover from the day before, repair damage from the sun and other exposures, and to restore good health and mood. Good quality beds ensure that you get the proper posture and night so that you wake up without pains in the morning.
Think about it, how many times do you hit the snooze button on an average morning before dragging yourself out of bed? You should be able to get up easily when the alarm first sounds and be ready to face whatever the day has to throw your way.
If you’re getting enough sleep at night, and the quality of sleep is good, then you will wake up feeling refreshed, alert, ready to get going and take on the world.
#2 You are Sleeping an Adequate Number of Hours
How much sleep do you need? That’s the question many of us have asked at some point. In a recent article in The New York Times, the author stated adults between the ages of 26 and 64 need between seven and nine hours of sleep nightly to obtain optimal health and well being.
The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School reports adults 18 years and older need 7.5 to 8.5 hours of sleep each night.
The author also reports that failing to sleep at least seven hours each night can increase your odds of developing numerous health conditions, including heart disease, obesity, and depression.
#3 You Have an Absence of Aches and Pains in the Morning
If you suddenly notice that you don’t have aches and pains when you wake in the morning, it could be a sign that you had good night’s sleep the night before. It’s one of those things that you might not even notice until you start your day, but once you do, you’re going to want to do it again and often.
Tossing and turning all night while trying to get comfortable is taxing on your system. It can leave you feeling beaten and battered, and even have you falling asleep in awkward positions that will lead to aching muscles and joints the next morning. The Huffington Post reports that waking up once per night, for approximately five minutes, is normal for most adults (those over the age of 65 may wake up twice for the same duration). It indicates that you are, in fact, getting the rest at night that your body needs to wake up refreshed and ready to go.
When you wake up more often, or for longer periods of time, it will interfere with your ability to get a good night’s sleep. Explore what’s going on to cause the frequent bouts of nocturnal wakefulness.
#8 You Remain Awake and Alert Throughout the Day
This is, perhaps, the most important sign to look for. It indicates that you’ve had a great night’s sleep the night before and you are experiencing no deficiencies in that arena. Are you craving a nap on certain days — or even every day?
Think about it, how many times do you wish you could just go back to bed on a normal day – even if only for a 30-minute cat nap? The absence of this desire to go back to bed, or grogginess upon waking in the morning, is a sure indication that all is well on the sleep front.
